Finals Day Wrap

The Lanka Lions took the honours as they were crowned Cup Winners for the fifth time in six years at the Chaophya Park Thailand International Cricket Sixes for 2013. The Singaporian based side beat the Hong Kong Challengers United to lift the cup with a brilliant performance. Chetan picked up the honours for the victorious side as he was named Man of the Match.

Earlier Lanka Lions had defeated MG7 in the semi-final with a polished performance, while the beaten finalists from Hong Kong had earlier seen off host club Southerners. Asif Ismail of the Challengers was awarded the Player of the Tournament trophy to round off a superb few days for his debutant side.

The Plate went to Mariners CC, also of Singapore who were too strong for Drunker Lions in the second grade final with Samir Apte being announced as the star man, following a fine performance. Beaten semi-finalists MG Warriors and Rayong Indians contributed much over the weekend and can leave with their heads held high.

The third grade Plate, which saw plenty of moments of the lighter side of the game, was won by Patong Pelicans of Phuket. They defeated Lamma CC in a gripping finale as they got over the line with a couple of balls to spare.  Ian Beck starred for the runners up and picked up the award as Man of the Final. England’s sole representatives, the Beer Battered Seadogs and Thai based side Pattaya CC gave much to the event but couldn’t quite cross the line in the race for honours as they bowed out as beaten semi-finalists.

The ACST Spirit of Cricket Award went to ony, a regular at the event over the years with the Lanka sides, who’s all-round attitude deservedly led to his trophy. The ACST also presented first timers Sanya with some cricket equipment to take back to their base on Hainan Island in the South China Sea.

Following the trophy presentations ACST Chairman Michael ‘Cat’ Maher said. “It’s been a pleasure to share the company of so many wonderful people who played the matches in the spirit in which the game is intended while making friends off the pitch. I can’t thank everyone enough, including all our tremendous sponsors. 2013 has surely being one of our best events, and I already can’t wait for 2014.”
