Thailand International Cricket Sixes 2010 - Final Day Report

31 October, 2010

Lanka Lions Roar Again in Bangkok

Day Two of the Chaophya Park Hotel Thailand International Cricket Sixes 2010 was all action and entertainment today at Harrow International School, Bangkok, Thailand with teams battling for positions in the finals.

First match of the day saw tournament hosts the Southerners CC take on Falcons KOTV of Kuwait in a Plate Division match up. Falcons posted a reasonable total of 66/0 (Vinay 33*, Sajid 23*) but fell to a determined effort by the local outfit led by Aniwal 34 not out and Rohit 26 not out as the Southerners took the match with an over to spare.

The motley crews of CBB SKs and the Asian All Stars provided an entertaining match in a Bowl Division decider. The CBBs limped to 57/2 after an inspired fielding performance from the unheralded All Stars. Monty too 2 wickets for 2 runs, Ken Acton leading the CBB innings with 20. Monty also led the charge for the All Stars with the bat with a breezy 21, but some tight bowling from the CBB attack pegged them back and they finished 10 runs short of their target.

Defending champions the Lanka Lions have looked impressive all tournament and reached the final once again following a fine victory over the Southerners. The Lankans amassed 87/1 (Sampath 32*, Suresh 29*) which the Southerners had little answer too and they struggled to 35 off their 5 overs (Rokit 22*).

Plate Final action saw the CBB SCs take on their colleagues the CBB SKs following a frenzied pre-match slammer session. In a match short on coordination, including a 7 ball duck by Reject, the SCs won the match and bragging rights. Saurav ‘Dollywood’ Chatterjee brought the SCs home thrashing the bowling to all parts of the ground with 27 not out to help his team reach their modest target of 38 with two overs to spare. More slammers, San Miguel and Bloody Mary quaffing then ensued. Tony Rudeforth was named Player of the Final.

The Bowl Final was a one sided contest between Pattaya CC and Vatsa Sporting Club from Mumbai, India. Batting first Pattaya CC struggled to 23/4 due to some impressive bowling from the Indian side particularly from Padman (1/5), Nilesh Kuyba (1/4) and team captain Pradeep Kshirsagar (1/4). Vatsa took just two overs to chase the target, Padman making a swashbuckling 17 not out. Padmanabhan Appan was named Player of the Final by the umpires.

The Cup Final saw Southerners in a rematch with the Lanka Lions. Batting first the Southerners posted a modest 58 against a fearsome bowling attack, Nathan Kincaid top scoring with 22 not out. In reply the Lions knocked off the runs inside four overs to convincingly retain their title of Thailand Sixes Cup Champions.

The Lanka Lions also earned other silverware with their players Chaminda winning the Player of the Cup Final award and Sampath, brother of Sri Lankan international Tillakaratne Dilshan, lifting the Player of the Tournament Award.

The Spirit of Cricket Award was presented to Pradeep Shivsagar, captain of Vatsa Sporting Club.

During the presentation ceremony Mr Mahmood Abdullah of the Skylarks from Kuwait donated a full kit bag of equipment to Mr Vaughan McClear of the Southerners for their club's junior development programme.

Pink Duke’s cricket balls were used in the finals and were widely appreciated for their easy visibility.

The third Chaophya Park Hotel Thailand International Cricket Sixes was played in wonderful surroundings and playing conditions at the Harrow International School.

Thailand International Cricket Sixes 2010 - Day One Report

Press release: 30 October 2010

Falcon KOTC, reigning Cup holders Lanka Lions, and hosts Southerners were the three leading teams after day one at the Chaophya Park Hotel Thailand International Cricket Sixes in the beautiful surroundings of the Harrow International School.

The nine teams and officials from all over the world arrived in fine form after a pleasant opening function at the Crossbar pub on Friday evening. When proceedings got underway the Lanka Lions of Singapore carried on where they left off last year with a fine win against the Vatsa Sporting Club from Mumbai. Sampath starred with a retirement with Padmanabhan Appan following suit although it wasn’t quite enough for the Indians.

Kuwaiti Falcon KOTC saw off Pattaya CC and the Asian All Stars with Sajid and Vinay starring with the bat. Southerners battled through injuries with great fortitude to win their two preliminary games with victories against the second team from Kuwait, Skylarks and the CBB SKs with youngster Aminwal leading the way.

Other games saw Vatsa’s chase down 50 to beat the CBB SCs, Skylarks set a far too daunting total for the CBB SK’s and Pattaya steam roll the Asian All Stars.

The teams were then ranked from one to nine and divided into groups of three to play for the Cup, Bowl and Plate.

The final games of the day saw a Bowl game in which Pattaya won a low scoring game against Skylark to take pole position in the group before proceedings were bought to a close by a battle royal between the two CBB teams in which the SKs collected bragging rights in a nail biting finale.

The teams adjourned to the Chaophya Park Hotel to enjoy a Gala Dinner to enjoy the free flowing refreshments from sponsors San Miguel and to share many happy memories while making friendships through cricket.

Finals day play starts at 9am on Sunday morning at Harrow with food and beverages available. All are welcome and admission is free.

Quality Time

Chaophya Park Hotel

Chaophya Park Hotel

The motto of the Thailand Sixes is ‘quality time’ and up to 16 teams from Thailand and flying in from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and around the region will come together to enjoy the organizers emphasis on delivering ‘quality time’ both on and off the ground. Good quality cricket, top-class event organisation and fantastic functions encouraging long-term camaraderie and friendship through cricket will be the hallmark of the new Thailand Sixes.

The Harrow International School provides an excellent venue for the tournament, offering comfortable facilities, ample room for spectators and good accessibility.

The tournament hotel is the four-star Chaophya Park Hotel. Being situated right next to the Ratchadaphisek subway station means it’s within easy reach of the rest of Bangkok. The hotel boasts 402 very spacious and comfortable rooms, friendly and efficient staff, and perhaps most importantly, a buffet breakfast that would rival many high-end hotels and challenge the hungriest cricketer.

The Cricket Sixes Concept

Cricket Sixes is a short form of the sport of cricket where six players make up each team rather than the traditional eleven. In some ways the idea is similar to Rugby Sevens in that each Cricket Sixes match is designed to incorporate all the most exciting aspects of the sport: high scores, fast action and exciting match finishes.

Now recognised worldwide, the Sixes format is a definite “crowd-pleaser” with each match lasting about 45 minutes.
